SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The City of Sioux Falls is once again deploying sound cannons to scare away geese in an effort to keep the skies safe for aircraft.
Sioux Falls is a hotspot for geese during the winter because portions of the Big Sioux River remain open even with the colder temperatures. Access to nearby harvested crop fields also plays a factor.
The cannons are being used at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds, Elmwood Golf Course, and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
Lead Animal Control Officer Thomas Rhoades said dealing with this many geese wasn’t something he thought of when he started his job, but said it’s a big area of concern for the city.
