Brazil has launched the world's largest mosquito bio-factory, which will help fight mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, zika and chikungunya.
The facility, based in Curitiba, will breed Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia, a natural bacterium that reduces the ability of mosquitoes to transmit viruses to humans.
The bio-factory, called Wolbito do Brasil, is a collaborative project between the World Mosquito Program (WMP), Fiocruz, and the Institute of Molecular Biology of Parana (IBMP).
