A large and new dietary analysis has revealed what experts call India's hidden protein crisis,’ with nearly half of the protein consumed at home coming from staples such as rice, wheat, suji, and maida. Meanwhile, these sources are often considered to be of low nutritional value because they are not easily digestible and lack proper amino acid composition.
The study was conducted by the non-profit policy research think tank Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW). It uses the most recent Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) data from the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) for 2023–2024.
