SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - The Whitmore Elementary School District and Mountain Union School District will merge into one district beginning July 1, 2027.

The Shasta County Office of Education says that the schools will remain open, aiming to enhance efficiency and educational offerings.

This marks the first merger of Shasta County school districts since the Gateway Unified School District was formed in 1992.

Each district runs one kindergarten through eighth-grade school in eastern Shasta County. Whitmore Elementary School has 64 students, and Montgomery Creek Elementary School has 70 students.

Although they share a superintendent, Tony Moebes, each has its own Board of Trustees, both of which voted in favor of the merger. The existing boards will govern the new district until the next
