WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)-- A controversial proposal to redraw Indiana’s congressional districts mid-cycle has officially failed. House Bill 1032—legislation that had drawn national attention—was voted down Thursday in the Indiana Senate by a 31–19 margin, halting efforts to implement a new congressional map ahead of the usual ten-year redistricting cycle.
The bill previously passed the Indiana House but faced growing skepticism in the Senate. The proposed map would have split Tippecanoe County between Districts 4 and 5, and political analysts projected the changes could have given Republicans all nine congressional seats, eliminating Indiana’s two Democratic-held districts.
State Senator Spencer Deery, a Republican representing West Lafayette, was among the 31 lawmakers who voted no.
