The Delhi High Court on Friday directed social media intermediaries to consider a complaint filed by former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar regarding the protection of his personality and publicity rights, and to resolve it within a week under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora issued this directive after Gavaskar alleged the misuse of his name, photographs, and likeness on social media and e-commerce platforms. Gavaskar’s counsel provided a list of infringing content, prompting Justice Arora to reiterate that individuals must first use the 2021 IT Rules’ mechanism for removing objectionable online content before seeking court intervention.
