AMES — Iowa basketball was walking dangerously close to a complete collapse.

Iowa State scored the first 16 points of the second half, turning an eight-point deficit into an eight-point lead. Before the midway point of the second half, Iowa State stretched its advantage to 10, the largest of the game for the Cyclones.

The Hawkeyes , who led by as many as 13 in the first half, were unravelling right before our eyes — with few indications that things would take a turn for the better.

But they did.

Iowa went on an 8-0 run to pull back within two points with less than nine minutes remaining, an impressive response by a team that looked awfully close to being dead in the water.

That made for a tightly contested game down the stretch.
