A self-driving Waymo taxi in San Francisco got an unexpected extra passenger while en route to a hospital with a pregnant woman.

The woman was on her way to the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center on Monday when she gave birth in the back seat of the driverless taxi.

A Waymo spokesperson told ABC 7 the company’s rider support team detected unusual activity inside the vehicle and called to check in on the passenger while also alerting emergency personnel.

“This is not the first baby to be born inside a Waymo vehicle. While it’s a rare occurrence … some of our newest riders just can’t wait to experience their first ride,” said the spokesperson.
