The Supreme Court has significantly loosened campaign finance regulations over the last 20 years, most notably with its 2010 decision in Citizens United that allowed corporations and other outside groups can spend unlimited amounts on candidates. A 2014 decision lifted a cap on what wealthy donors can give to federal candidates, political parties and committees.
