Mayor Jon Mitchell awarded $500,000 in grant funds to six local organizations working to address opioid misuse in Greater New Bedford.
The grants, which were awarded Dec. 11, are funded through the Greater New Bedford Opioid Task Force. The money comes from legal settlements with opioid distributors, manufacturers, pharmacies and other companies in the industry, according to a community announcement.
The funds will be used to boost prevention, treatment access and recovery support across the region. The Greater New Bedford Opioid Task Force has been working to combat the opioid epidemic since 2015, when it was formed by Mitchell.
These grants will enable the task force's partner organizations to continue this work, Mitchell said in the announcement.
