The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that two benefit schemes are being abolished next year amid ongoing efforts to move ‘legacy benefits ’ onto the Universal Credit system.

From April 1, 2026, people will no longer be able to claim Income Support (IS) and Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) in the UK , with people instead transitioning to the Universal Credit scheme.

Those who are still on the IS and JSA schemes have been told they will receive a letter requiring them to start the migration process to begin claiming Universal Credit.

Although the DWP believes no one will be claiming those benefits by April, last month, The Independent revealed that more than 80,000 people were still receiving them earlier this year.
