BEAUMONT, Texas — A 46-year-old Beaumont man is dead after he fired shots at officers who were pursuing him as an armed suspect, prompting officers to return fire near Seventh St and Interstate 10 in Beaumont on Friday morning, authorities said.

Beaumont police said officers used lethal force after the man shot at them several times near the Seventh Street overpass, just feet from nearby businesses. No officers were injured.

At about 9:17 a.m., Beaumont officers responded to assist Port Arthur police who were pursuing an armed suspect originating from Port Arthur, according to a Beaumont Police Department news release. The pursuit ended when the suspect lost control of his vehicle on the I-10 service road near Seventh Street, crashed, exited the vehicle and began firing at officers.
