The Alabama Highway Authority on Thursday issued $730 million in bonds to complete a four-lane route from Mobile to Tuscaloosa, an initiative the Gov. Kay Ivey administration has long supported as necessary to support the economy in west Alabama.

The state Finance Department issued a statement about the bond issue, first reported by Alabama Daily News.

The bond issue will “support the planning, design, and construction of the West Alabama Corridor project.”

The funds will be used to expand from two lanes to four lanes the highway from Thomasville to Moundville

That will complete a four-lane corridor from Mobile to Tuscaloosa, a distance of about 200 miles.
