ELIZABETH - A Newark man wanted in connection with a 2022 fatal hit-and-run in Elizabeth has been taken into custody in the Dominican Republic, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Elizabeth Police Chief Giacomo Sacca, and Elizabeth Police Director Earl Graves announced.
Trevon Smith, 27, has been charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and third-degree hindering prosecution.
The charges stem from an Oct. 8, 2022, incident when Elizabeth police responded at approximately 2:47 a.m. to the area of Newark Avenue and Durant Avenue to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Officers found 30-year-old Adi Taipe-Castillo, of Roselle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
