A bomb squad was called to The Royal Liverpool Golf Club on Friday following the discovery of what appeared to be an unexploded artillery shell on the course.

The historic course in Hoylake was cordoned off after staff carrying out routine drainage work unearthed the explosive buried in the ground.

In a statement, Merseyside Police confirmed that they were called to the golf club on Meols Drive at approximately 12.30pm on Friday.

A force spokesperson said: "We can confirm that emergency services are at The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake following a report that a suspected unexploded artillery shell was found on the course.
