IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — The Iredell County Sheriff's Office is alerting vendors to a scam that uses the agency's youth athletic program information to fraudulently collect vendor fees.
The sheriff's office said it is not affiliated with flyers and social media posts circulating about youth athletic events that request payment from vendors.
According to the agency, scammers research scheduled events and contact vendors through email and phone calls, attempting to appear legitimate. The fraudsters request payment through electronic payment apps including PayPal, Zelle and similar services.
The sheriff's office said this type of scam frequently targets vendors who rely on events for their income.
