A major water rescue response unfolded along the Susquehanna River in Maryland as crews raced to save lives — and then shifted into recovery mode.
Emergency responders were called to the river near the Hatem Bridge in Havre de Grace before noon on Friday, Dec. 12, after reports of people in the water, according to the Susquehanna Hose Company.
Fire officials said one victim was located and transported to Christiana Trauma by Harford County Department of Emergency Services, while crews continued searching for a reported second victim.
As of the latest update, divers had entered the water and were operating in recovery mode, officials said.
"Crews, along with multiple mutual aid assets, are working a water rescue in the Susquehanna River, near the Hatem Bridge," officials said.
The response drew multiple mutual aid agencies, emergency vehicles, boats, and aerial support to the area near the Water Street boat ramp, where officials urged the public to stay clear.
“We ask that you avoid the area of the Water Street boat ramp,” the department said.
The incident remains active, and no additional details about the victims or the circumstances leading up to the rescue have been released.
