WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has charged a Williamsburg County deputy in the May assault of a Kingstree High School student, the agency confirmed.

Garey Darnell McKnight, 48, is charged with third-degree assault and battery, SLED spokesperson Renée Wunderlich confirmed.

The arrest warrant states that on May 13 at the school, McKnight used both hands to grab the student by the upper body and “violently pushed, pulled and forced the victim backwards over a railing.”

Court documents state McKnight did not give the student any commands or say that he was detaining the victim, who was standing “passively in front of McKnight.”

That confrontation was captured on cellphone video and released by McKnight’s law firm in May.
