A popular South Shields bar has been forced to close after a 'last resort' prohibition notice was served amid public safety concerns. Owners confirming the sad news less than two weeks till Christmas, are hoping to reopen 'as soon as possible'

Visitors to the historic Marsden Grotto can usually access the beach front premise - where a bar and restaurant overlook the sea with hotel rooms tucked away in caves to the back - from the Coast Road via lift or stairs.

However last week, South Tyneside Council announced that Marsden Grotto steps were to be closed, with members of the public warned to stay away whilst survey work was carried out.

And now posting on social media on Friday afternoon, December 12, The Grotto confirmed
