At least nine people died and 22 others were injured after a private bus carrying pilgrims fell and overturned into a valley in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitarama Raju district in the early hours of Friday, December 12.

The accident happened around 4:30 am on the Chintoor-Maredumilli ghat road near a Durga temple, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Bardar, as per news agency PTI.

"At least nine people died and 22 were injured as the bus fell off the ghat road. The bus did not fully plunge into the valley. It turned turtle... and got stuck," he told PTI.

He added that the bus driver possibly did not see a curve at the accident site due to heavy fog.

Four of the injured are reportedly in a critical condition and have been hospitalised.
