A spate of water main breaks doesn’t appear weather-related, despite the recent cold snap.

An 8-inch main failed under Humphrey Street in Swampscott - sending a river of water everywhere while making a slow and wet the morning commute.

“I saw a whole gush of water on the street so I was just assuming there was a leak somewhere, but it quickly became a torrent,” said neighbor David Coffey.

The pipe was cast iron and about 100 years old. The colder-than-normal December temperatures apparently didn’t contribute to this messy mishap since the ground still isn’t frozen enough.

“We have a few weeks of frost and it stays cold and then the frost line will go down. It’s when the ground shifts, moves. Pipes let go,” said B
