Two construction firms involved in the death of a worker at the Oakridge redevelopment in Vancouver have been fined more than $627,000 for several “high risk violations,” including failing to keep ground workers away from the area where a crane dropped its load.
Yuridia Flores, a mother of two from Mexico, was killed when a flytable being moved by a tower crane came loose and crashed to the ground on Feb. 21, 2024, crushing her. A flytable is a large table-like form used to pour concrete floor slabs.
WorkSafeBC said she shouldn’t have been in the area and the two companies had failed to follow safety procedures that should have prevented her death. The agency said there were 20 violations in total, 18 of them causing high risk.
