Tennessee American Water is asking for help from customers across the state as it works to comply with new federal drinking water requirements aimed at reducing potential lead exposure.

The company says it is sending letters to customers this month requesting assistance in identifying the material of the pipe that connects the water meter to homes and businesses. That section of pipe, known as the customer-owned service line, is not installed or maintained by Tennessee American Water, making customer participation critical to the effort.

The initiative supports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, which require water utilities to identify and publicly report the materials used in both company-owned and customer-owned service lines.
