After the Komets’ first goal Friday at Memorial Coliseum, a crowd of 7,467 threw over 3,000 stuffed animals onto the ice as part of their annual Teddy Bear Toss.

In the final two minutes and 19 seconds of the third period, the Komets threw away a chance at two points.

After leading 3-0 in the first period, the Komets lost to the Kansas City Mavericks 5-4 after allowing two extra-attacker goals to tie the game and another with 11.7 seconds remaining.

“It’s a learning lesson,” Komets coach Jesse Kallechy said. “You want to win a championship? You have to find ways to close out games and manage games. I thought the last one, the moment just got to us a bit. We had a chance to settle in and get a point.”
