MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Frigid temperatures expected this weekend across Southern Wisconsin mean many people will turn up their thermostats and stay inside, but for those experiencing homelessness, basic survival is on the line.

At Porchlight , a men’s homeless shelter, evening check-in looked different on Friday, as they prepared for an extreme weather night.

“We never turn anyone away, even if they got into a fight the day before, on extreme weather nights like this,” Fares Fares, Porchlight manager said.

For organizations fighting housing insecurity, below freezing weather means working endlessly to make sure as many people as possible have a warm place to sleep.

“It’s a pretty miserable experience for anybody, and it is dangerous in these very cold temperatures,” said Brenda Kon
