IT’S hardly a revelation that the UK Government is in crisis on a number of fronts. The Budget has not steadied the ship and the leadership challenge rumour mill has cranked back into action.
The Government is faring no better with its policy of rampant militarism. This week, we learnt that defence procurement is a mess, with a Polish government minister ridiculing the over-budget and late Ajax armoured personnel carrier programme – which cost £6.3 billion but has been found to have made soldiers ill during trials.
A former Royal Navy admiral wrote in The Telegraph last weekend that Britain was no longer capable of operating a fleet of nuclear submarines, so calamitous were the delays in the construction, maintenance, retrofitting and decommissioning of such vessels.
