A SCOTTISH Labour MP has called for "serious debate" on the abolition of the House of Lords.

It comes as Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has remained silent after the SNP challenged the party to say whether they agree with their own words on the Lords.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer published a list of 25 Labour allies who would be handed seats in the unelected upper chamber.

Despite previous pledges to abolish the Lords altogether, the Labour leader has now appointed 62 Labour peers in under 18 months in power.

Downing Street insisted on Thursday that it remains committed to overhauling the Lords and replace it with "an alternative second chamber that is more representative of the nations and regions".
