The Penguins are in better position than almost anyone thought they would be through 29 games. But it’s hard to shake the feeling that it could be so much better.

Their 1-7 overtime record — including a disastrous shootout loss Tuesday vs. Anaheim in which they gave up a tying goal with 0.1 seconds remaining — looms large amid a crowded Eastern Conference.

The Penguins’ play in 3-on-3 overtime has been fine. They’ve scored just one goal, but they’ve only allowed two. The real problem has been shootouts, where they are now 0-5 despite employing Sidney Crosby and getting strong goaltending in almost every other situation.
