A veteran New Jersey law enforcement official has been placed on paid leave following an alleged on-duty crash in an unmarked patrol car in a neighboring town that resulted in two citations, NJ Advance Media reports.
Court records show that North Plainfield Police Capt. Edward Ciempola was cited for careless driving/likely to endanger a person or property, and for having an open container of alcohol or unsealed cannabis in a motor vehicle following an incident on Otto Road in Branchburg on July 21.
According to NJ Advance Media, Ciempola was on duty at the time of the traffic stop.
North Plainfield Police Chief Alan McKay confirmed Ciempola is on paid leave but declined to comment further or say why when contacted by Daily Voice.
Ciempola's LinkedIn page shows that he joined NPPD in 1985. He was promoted to the rank of captain in February of this year.
No additional details about the incident or any potential internal investigation have been released.
