Scotland is often associated with the famous Highland bagpipes - an integral part of Scottish culture. However, a history writer has recently highlighted that the instrument is not truly Scottish and actually originates from elsewhere. ‌

It's been claimed that early bagpipes were actually used in modern-day Turkey back in 1000BC and the pipes did not appear in Scotland until the late 14th century. History expert Kirsten Henton wrote in Scotland magazine: "There’s no getting around it: bagpipes did not originate in Scotland." ‌

She explained that bagpipes first appeared in lands far away from our country, both in time and distance. The historian said that the instrument was used throughout antiquity across Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, soundtracking
