OTTAWA — Buoyed by the defection of another Conservative MP to the government benches, Liberal House Leader Steven MacKinnon claimed Friday that there are more disgruntled Tories who might find a home in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s caucus.

But the Conservatives are firing back, accusing Carney of showing contempt for voters and acting like a “shady backroom dealer” trying to secure more power by attracting opposition MPs after he was elected with a minority mandate.

The Liberal government is now just one seat shy of holding a majority in the House of Commons, with two Conservatives crossing the floor — and a third having seriously considered doing so, as the Star has reported — in little over a month.
