U.S. Coast Guard crews, including members of Oregon’s Astoria station, pulled off a dramatic helicopter rescue in western Washington on Wednesday after continued heavy flooding stranded four residents in an attic.
Video released on Friday shows an aerial view of the air rescue in the small community of Sumas in Whatcom County. Officials called in the aircraft because ground crews were unable to reach the stranded Washingtonians as floodwaters as high as 10 feet surrounded the house, according to the Coast Guard.
One of the two helicopter crews that responded to the call dropped a rescue swimmer onto the home’s roof. The rescue swimmer quickly helped the people inside escape through a window, officials said.
