Police responded to reports of an active shooter near the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island , on Saturday.

The Ivy League school sent out an alert shortly before 4:30 p.m. Eastern time, urging students and staff to “lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice.”
