Multiple people have been shot, and a suspect is not in custody amid an ongoing active shooter situation near Brown University's campus in Providence, Rhode Island, according to an emergency alert issued by the Ivy League school .
Providence police said in an X post at 5:33 p.m. ET that multiple people were shot in the area of Brown University on Saturday, Dec. 13, and that this is an active investigation. Police also advised residents and the students to "shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice."
Brown University clarified that "police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s)," moments after posting a second alert Saturday afternoon saying, "one suspect in custody."
