DAVIS, CA ( 25News Now and AP) - Illinois State University’s football team is just two wins away from winning a national championship after scoring its second straight upset victory in the FCS playoffs.
A week after stunning defending national champion North Dakota State, the unseeded Redbirds traveled to the west coast on Saturday where they defeated 8th seeded University of California at Davis 42-31. The Aggies ended the Redbirds’ season a year ago in the second round of the FCS playoffs with a 42-10 victory.
In Saturday’s quarterfinal, ISU led 23-17 at the half and survived the Aggies’ fourth quarter comeback attempt, outscoring the Redbirds 14-7.
