SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane is hosting the national K-12 Chess Championship this weekend, bringing together around 1,400 players from all across the country.

"It's a lot to put together, but what's really neat is just meeting all the different programs from all around the country," said Erik Czerwin, the assistant director of events for US Chess. "We've got Florida, New York, Texas. Miami Dade brought 50 players so imagine they're coming all the way to Spokane from Florida. It was a journey to get here."

Players have been registering for the last few months and started facing off in matches on Friday.

Each age group will have a crowned winner, which will be declared on Sunday.
