Raj Kapoor, ever the showman, famously defended the bold, sensual portrayal of Zeenat Aman in his 1978 film Satyam Shivam Sundaram with a cheeky line: “Let them come to see Zeenat’s body. They will go out remembering my film.”

The movie was sold (and criticised) for its racy visuals: Zeenat in skimpy choli s, wet sarees clinging to her curves, the camera lingering unapologetically. Yet Raj Kapoor's calculation was that once inside the theatres, audiences would stay for (or at least leave talking about) his deeper philosophical theme: true beauty lies in the soul, not the physical form.
