Police in Australia have confirmed there are multiple fatalities after a shooting incident around the country's busy Bondi Beach area on Sunday.

Two people are in police custody, New South Wales (NSW) police said in a statement, shortly after warning those around Bondi Beach should "take shelter until we can determine what is happening."

"The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing," Australia's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said in a statement.

Australian media reported an event to mark the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah was scheduled to take place at the beach on Sunday evening local time.

Six people have been taken to hospital, a local ambulance spokesperson said. It is not yet clear how many people have been killed.
