Yaniece Brown scored a career-high 12 points to go with eight rebounds to help lead sixth-seeded Weequahic to a 48-27 victory over 11th-seeded Barringer in the first round of the Newark Public Schools Tournament at Weequahic.
Jasmine Agyeman-Budu had 11 points and five rebounds for Weequahic (1-0), which sprinted out to a 15-2 first quarter lead and never looked back.
Anaya Whitehead added 10 points with six rebounds and Aliyah Rainey had seven points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Weequahic will play third-seeded Science Park in the quarterfinals on Dec. 27 at Weequahic.
Barringer (0-1) will play 14th-seeded Newark Global Studies as part of the Newark Invitational on Dec. 27.
