A person of interest was detained overnight in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University , officials said Sunday.

Two people were killed and nine others were wounded in the shooting Saturday afternoon in the engineering building of the Ivy League school in Providence, Rhode Island, during final exams.

The person of interest has been identified as 24-year-old Benjamin W. Erickson, CBS News has confirmed. Erickson was an infantryman in the Army from May 2021 to November 2024, an Army spokesperson told CBS News.

"He has no deployments and left the Army in the rank of specialist," said Lt. Col. Ruth Castro.
