WASHINGTON — Australia is grappling with one of its deadliest shootings in nearly three decades after at least 16 people were killed when gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday.

One gunman was killed by police, while a second suspect was arrested and remains in critical condition. At least 29 others were wounded, including two police officers.

The attack unfolded at one of the country’s most famous public beaches, where thousands had gathered at the end of a summer day. Authorities declared the shooting a terrorist attack, explaining that hundreds were there for a Chanukah by the Sea event celebrating the start of the eight-day Jewish holiday.
