A 19-year-old man has been charged over the alleged attempted abduction of two young girls in separate incidents in the Northern Territory (NT).

NT Police allege the man grabbed a young girl as she walked into the toilets at an oval on the Stuart Highway in Katherine about 6:30pm on Thursday.

He allegedly attempted to drag her away by her arm, but she managed to escape and run to her parents.

The girl’s parents alerted police to the incident and the 19-year-old was arrested shortly after.

Detective senior sergeant Michael Ordelman said the ordeal was "frightening” for the young girl and praised her for alerting her parents to it.

Investigators allege the 19-year-old also approached a second young girl in a similar way, around the same time as the first incident.
