1855:Queen Victoria signed an Order in Council renaming Van Diemen's Land Tasmania. Tasmania is an island state in Australia. It is located 240 kilometers south of the Australian mainland and faces the Australian mainland across Bass Strait. It is Australia's least populous state, its capital and largest city is Hobart, and about 40% of the population lives in the greater Hobart area.


1944:Australian cricketer Terry Jenner was born. Primarily a leg-spin bowler, he is known for his aggressive, curveball style, but he is also a capable low-order batsman. He is also a radio cricket commentator for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He died at home on May 25, 2011. The funeral was held on 30 May 2011 at Adelaide Oval.


1954:Australia became a founding member of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) is an international organization for collective defense in Southeast Asia created by the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty signed in Manila, Philippines, in September 1954. Its main purpose is to prevent further expansion of communism in Southeast Asia. The organization later disbanded on June 30, 1977.


2006:Racing champion Peter Brock died during a race in Perth. He won the Bathurst 1000 nine times, the Sandown 500 nine times, the Australian Touring Car Championship three times, the Bathurst 24 Hours once and was inducted into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame in 2001. After his death, a permanent memorial to him was installed at Sandown Raceway.


2023:A car hit pedestrians and two other cars in Melbourne's CBD, killing one person and injuring several others, leaving the pedestrian lying on the road and others running for help. The car struck pedestrians on Bourke Street near the corner of Swanston Street before crashing into two cars near the corner of Russell Street at about 6.30pm. The driver of the car was arrested at the scene and has been detained.
