SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Astronaut and Syracuse native Jeanette Epps has retired.

NASA announced on Thursday that Epps officially retired on May 30. She spent 16 years working for NASA.

She most recently served as a mission specialist during NASA’s SpaceX Crew-8 mission. She spent 235 days in space, including 232 days aboard the International Space Station, working on hundreds of scientific experiments during Expedition 71/72, NASA said.

Epps holds a bachelor's degree in physics from Le Moyne College. She earned a master's and doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland in College Park.

Recently, she visited her alma mater, Corcoran High School, to highlight her time on the International Space Station to students.
