NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Due to proposed cuts, the New Orleans Job Corps Center says it could be shutting down in less than a month.

Some city council members say shutting down Job Corps would be a step backwards for young people in the city.

During Thursday morning's Criminal Justice Committee meeting, Council President JP Morrell said recent drops in crime aren't just because of police work, but also because young people are being steered in the right direction.

"For once, every possible way that we can deter kids going into that life we're firing on all cylinders right now. And threatening the future of Jobs Corps, threatening the ability for kids and adults trying to re-enter the workforce, that is the opposite direction," said Morrell
