NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven high school student was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on July 21, city Mayor Justin Elicker and Superintendent Madeline Negrón said in a joint statement.

The rising junior at Wilbur Cross High School is a recent immigrant, they said. ICE picked him up during what they described as an "enforcement action" at his workplace.

The student, who has been identified as Esdras R., is currently at a detention center in Massachusetts.

Elicker and Negrón said the city and school district are working with Unidad Latina en Accion and Connecticut Students for a Dream to learn more about the situation and "engage legal support" for Esdras.
