Two parents were charged after their baby overdosed on opiates at a home near Bessemer City, according to the Gaston County Police Department.

Kayla Wilhelm, 29, and Bobby McKinney, 33, came under investigation on July 27, 2025 after an 8-month-old baby at their home on Rural Retreat Road was found unresponsive. The baby was treated by paramedics and taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center, and she is recovering, the press release said.

Wilhelm and McKinney were arrested on charges of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, felony maintaining a vehicle or dwelling place for controlled substances, and two counts each of felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver Schedule II controlled substances.
