Bluestem Lake in southern Lancaster County is no longer under a health alert for toxic blue-green algae.

The state Department of Water, Energy, and Environment issued the alert Aug. 7 after samples measured above the toxin's threshold of eight parts per billion.

Certain strains of blue-green algae release the toxin total microcystin.

Bluestem State Recreation Area features 742 acres of land and a 325-acre lake located southwest of Lincoln.

Meanwhile, Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson County was put on alert after water sampled there measured above the state's threshold, according to a Thursday news release.

When health alerts are issued, signs are posted to caution the public and designated swimming beaches are closed. Recreational boating and fishing are allowed, but the public is advised
