MORTONS GAP, Ky. (WEVV) — One lane of northbound Interstate 69 in Hopkins County remains closed as engineers continue investigating ground movement beneath the roadway.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) closed the slow lane near Mortons Gap last Friday after cracks and slides appeared in the pavement. The issue was first noticed earlier this month following heavy rainfall, when sections of the shoulder and driving lane began to sink.

“Then we got another storm last week, and it got worse,” a KYTC official said.

“That’s not typically what we see with this kind of slide, so we started looking deeper. It quickly became clear that something underneath the road was causing it.”
