Rehabilitation and Reentry officials with the Arizona Department of Corrections are pushing back on reports that a Pinal County inmate was mistakenly released this summer due to a miscalculation of his sentence. Instead, they blame an “ambiguous and unclear” court document as the cause.

InMaricopa broke the story in the case of Shane Hounshell. He was released eight months early before contacting his attorney and being sent back to prison. Pinal County Judge Jason Holmberg previously blamed Arizona’s DOC for the error.

On July 21, inmate Hounshell was released to probation. According to ADCRR , he was brought back into custody Aug. 14 after a Pinal County Superior Court minute entry dated May 19 failed to specify to which conviction a modified sentence applied.
